Sound can be transmitted, diffused, absorbed, or reflected. When a room surface (eg ceiling or wall) is "hit" by a sound wave, some of the sound energy is reflected, some is absorbed by the material and some is transmitted through the surface material.

The elastic properties of the foam are such that with the deformation, which exists when a sound wave enters, part of the energy is absorbed. The honeycomb structure of the foam expands the "absorbent surface", increasing the sound-absorbing capacity. The part of the sound that is not absorbed by a cell is reflected on the walls of it or a neighboring one, with the result that in each case some of the sound energy is lost and the sound absorption increases.
